چکیده

In this study a non-hydrostatic version of Penn State University (PSU) – National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) mesoscale model is used to simulate the super cyclonic storm that crossed Orissa coast on 29 October 1999. The model is integrated up to 123 h for producing 5-day forecast of the storm. Several important fields including sea level pressure, horizontal wind and rainfall are compared with the verification analysis/observation to examine the performance of the model. The model simulated track of the cyclone is compared with the best-fit track obtained from India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the track obtained from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. The model is found to perform reasonably well in simulating the track and in particular, the intensity of the storm.

Numerical simulations of a large-amplitude mesoscale gravity wave event

Numerical simulations with the NCAR=PSU Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) were performed to study a large-amplitude gravity wave event that occurred on 4 January 1994 along the East Coast of the United States. Results from the MM5 control simulation using a 12-km mesh resolution compared well with the synoptic and mesoscale observational analysis. The simulated gravity waves displayed timing, location, w...

Mental Health Consequences of the Trauma of Super-Cyclone 1999 in Orissa

A super-cyclone hit 12 coastal districts of Orissa in October 1999 and caused over 20,000 deaths and a considerable damage to property. The psychiatric sequelae of the super-cyclone was studied using a semi-structured proforma for disaster experience, Self Reporting Questionnaire, Impact of Event Scale, Post Traumatic Symptoms Scale, Hopelessness Scale, Suicidality Screening Questionnaire, Hosp...

The Impacts of Mesoscale Dynamics on Cirrus Structure Evaluated Using a High-Resolution Mesoscale Model

A thorough understanding of the dynamics of cirrus cloud formation is needed in order to parameterize these clouds accurately in numerical models. The scales at which cirrus clouds develop affect their treatment within the coarse resolution climate models, which typically have grid-point separations on The model used for this experiment is the non-hydrostatic verthe order of 200 km. There is a ...

Mangroves protected villages and reduced death toll during Indian super cyclone.

Protection against coastal disasters has been identified as an important service of mangrove ecosystems. Empirical studies on this service have been criticized, however, for using small samples and inadequately controlling for confounding factors. We used data on several hundred villages to test the impact of mangroves on human deaths during a 1999 super cyclone that struck Orissa, India. We fo...

Sensitivity of the Modeled North American Monsoon Regional Climate to Convective Parameterization

This paper documents the sensitivity of the modeled evolution of the North American monsoon system (NAMS) to convective parameterization in terms of thermodynamic and circulation characteristics, stability profiles, and precipitation. The convective parameterization schemes (CPSs) of Betts–Miller–Janjic, Kain–Fritsch, and Grell were tested using version 3.4 of the PSU–NCAR fifth-generation Meso...
